Breast Lifts

Over the years, a woman's breasts are affected by factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and changes in skin elasticity.  As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts.

Mastopexy can also be used to reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume, fat transfer in conjunction with a mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.

Who is an ideal candidate for breast lifts?

Any woman who is unhappy with the aesthetic appearance of their breasts because they sag, droop or lack firmness is an ideal candidate for this procedure. Ideal candidates must also be in overall good health and have realistic expectations for procedure results.

How is a breast lift procedure done?

Many Mastopexy procedures are performed using the tumescent local anesthesia and IV sedation. There are a few techniques for breast lift surgery and some are as follows:

For patients who have slight ptosis, the Crescent Lift is a good choice. For this procedure, a crescent-shaped piece of tissue above the areola is removed, and the skin is re-sutured higher.

For mild sagging, a less invasive technique is the Benelli Lift. A donut-shaped piece of tissue around the areola border is removed. The incisions are then closed with purse string sutures to lift the breast.

For moderate sagging, the Benelli-Lollipop technique uses straight incisions from under the areolae to the mammary folds (crease).

For severe sagging, the Full Mastopexy uses an anchor-shaped incision that starts at the base of the areola and goes vertically to where the breast meets the rib cage. Nipple re-positioning is necessary with this technique, as the nipple must be removed.

Why would I want a breast lift?

A breast lift can improve firmness and fullness of the breasts. It can help you achieve the most pleasing aesthetic for your breasts, improving their overall physical contour and boosting your self esteem and confidence.

Will a breast lift make my breasts bigger?

Although a breast lift can increase the fullness of breasts, it is not designed to increase breast size. To increase breast size, a breast augmentation is required. However, you can always opt to do a breast lift in conjunction with a breast augmentation.

How can I judge how much skin should be removed during the procedure?

An attractive breast is generally achieved by a balance between breast volume and the amount of breast skin that maintains that volume. The amount of skin to be removed is determined by achieving an appealing balance between volume and surface area.

How long does the procedure take?

The breast lift procedure generally takes about 3 hours.

What is the recovery period like?

Immediately following surgery, gauze dressing is applied to the treated area and a supportive garment is worn. There may be some temporary bruising, soreness, and swelling.

Are the results from a breast lift permanent?

Yes. However, factors such as age, pregnancy, and massive fluctuations in weight may influence results from a breast lift.
